Digital euro timeline and core design: what the Eurosystem has confirmed
The Eurosystem plans a possible first issuance of a digital euro in 2029, conditional on EU legislators adopting required rules by end‑2026 and on the ECB Governing Council’s issuance decision. A 12‑month pilot will begin in H2 2027 to test wallets, payments and offline features, with core design set by the ECB and national central banks.
